In 2012, the FOCAPO conference was organized by Jose Pinto and Nick Sahinidis and took place immediately before CPC VIII, with a joint programming day devoted to challenges and opportunities for integration of operations and control, especially in the context of emerging energy applications. The joint conference brochure provides a concise description of FOCAPO 2012/CPC VIII.

Participants of FOCAPO 2012 discussed challenges and needs for process oriented industries, including chemicals, energy, and pharmaceuticals. Conference sessions addressed topics that included enterprise-wide optimization, multiscale systems, risk management, and integration of operations and control.
